The 2024 edition of Local Radio Day focussed on building bridges, and this year, the Radio Harrow team did just that with a day of live broadcasting to mark the occasion.
The day began with a special edition of the breakfast show, hosted by David Reece.
Shrey Puranik then broadcast a mid-morning show, Local Shreydio Day, during which Andrew Bottcher caught up with the organisers of Northolt’s Haunted House.
At midday, a Local Radio Day Team Show special aired, with live interviews with Sharon from Mums For Lungs, and Julian Lloyd, CEO of the regional branch of Age UK.
There was live coverage on social media throughout with Radio Harrow volunteers and members of the community alike sharing what local radio meant to them. We’ve included the videos from our official Instagram page below.
Friday 8th November marks Local Radio Day 2024, and Radio Harrow will be presenting a series of special shows to mark the occasion.
From the official Local Radio Day website:
This year the theme is Building Bridges. Radio is a powerful medium with the ability to bring people together. It connects its listeners to local news, events and acts as a platform for community groups.

Radio Harrow is pleased to be participating in this event in support of these two local residents
taking the initiative to raise money to support the valuable service provided by Meadow House
Hospice.
It is going to be a family fun day with something for everyone. It kicks off with Captain Fantastic
and a magic show by a magician who has entertained royalty. There will be live music from “Elvis”
and “Ed Sheeran”, Spiderman 3-D bouncy castle, face painting, lots of games like splat the parent,
food stalls – candy floss, cupcakes, snow cones, popcorn, hotdogs etc. raffles with some spectacular
prizes generously donated by local businesses, glitter and henna tattoos, and much, much more. Of
course Radio Harrow will be there to provide more than just music.
Lisa and Jason Cole are residents in Northolt who have been fundraising for many years and this
event is again for Meadow House Hospice because his mother received palliative care from them
and they were keen to give back. Jason is an Elvis singer and Lisa runs a cake business and has a
background in sales and marketing. Last Halloween they raised £450 and £240 from a Christmas
event for Meadow House Hospice.
It all started during lockdown, organising events outside to entertain their children at Halloween and
Christmas. Then it progressed to doing the charity events. They didn’t just clap for the NHS, they
raised much appreciated funds instead. They raised £1100 which is amazing given the conditions
we were all under during the pandemic — so hats off to them! Last year they did an event for the
coronation in May, but sadly in July Jason’s mum, Marilyn Cole, passed away after a 6 year battle
with lymphoma, so they did the Halloween and Christmas events as fundraisers for Meadow House.
Marilyn loved Halloween.
This awesome couple devote so much time to fundraising whilst having full time jobs and bringing
up their 8 children still at home and who also get fully involved! They actually have 14 children
between them plus the grandchildren to keep them busy!
This event is being held in the green space near their house and has been a success every time. The
address is Kempton Ave, Northolt, UB5 4HF.
Radio Harrow’s Tom and Amrita caught up with local author Micheal Rosen, discussing all things writing, inspiration as well as growing up in Pinner.

Radio Harrow are proud to be involved in RoxyFest 2024.
We’ll be sharing details of our involvement nearer the event, which this year takes place on Sunday 15th September.
In the latest episode of Conversation Corner – Sabeeha is joined by Rachel Walters from End Child Poverty.
You can listen to the interview below.
The End Child Poverty
The End Child Poverty coalition was set up in 2003 to leverage the work of a wide range of groups all of whom shared the objective of eradicating child poverty in the UK.
The coalition has worked to inform the public about the causes and effects of child poverty; forge commitment between, and across, the public, private and voluntary sectors to end child poverty; and to promote the case for ending child poverty with Government.
Together with a group of youth Ambassadors we all believe that no child growing up in the UK should live in poverty.

Gary Walker is joined by friend of the station, Nick DuGard where Nick reveals Wealdstone FC’s new management and plans for the season.

In this episode of Conversation Corner, Sabeeha is joined by Elizabeth Sullivan from Dementia UK – a charity supporting people living with dementia.
About Dementia UK
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family, working towards a day where no one has to face dementia alone. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing advice and support, to anyone affected by dementia, whenever it is needed.
Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia. Today there are around 944,000 people living with dementia, (including 70,800 living with young onset dementia, where symptoms develop under the age of 65) and right now there are only around 400 Admiral Nurses to support them and their families. Compared to many of the most serious health conditions, specialist follow-up support for dementia is hard to get because it barely exists. This is a huge and growing crisis that needs urgent attention.
As diagnosis rates increase every year, we need radical change so families get the support they need. We need more specialist Admiral Nurses and we need better understanding and awareness of the reality of dementia. As the only UK-wide charity dedicated to specialist dementia nursing, we want every family to know we will be there to support them – for as long as they need.
