World Suicide Prevention Day

10 September 2025 is World Suicide Prevention Day.

There are more than 720,000 estimated suicide deaths every year. We can all play a part in helping its prevention.

It is important that we keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues throughout the year and take the time to ask ‘how are you?’ – something as small as this can have a huge impact on someone who is struggling.

Every life lost to suicide leaves behind family, friends, and communities grieving, and yet many who struggle feel unable to reach out for help.

How can you help if you think someone you know is struggling:

  • Check in with friends, family, or colleagues — even a simple “How are you, really?” can make a difference.
  • Listen without judgment if someone shares how they feel. You don’t need to have all the answers; being there is enough.
  • Know the signs of withdrawing, changes in mood, or talking about hopelessness may all be cries for help.

  • Remember that asking someone directly about suicidal thoughts does not increase their risk and can actually help them.
  • Signpost support and encourage them to seek professional help by sharing helpline numbers and details (Samaritans, SHOUT, NHS & Hub of Hope)
  • If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, there is help available. You can contact:
    • Call the Samaritans on 116 123 – they are available to help 24/7 and calls are free.
    • Text ‘SHOUT’ to 85258 anytime day or night
    • You can visit your local A&E
    • For more local resources, visit the Hub of Hope at https://hubofhope.co.uk

This month, and every month, let’s remind each other that it’s okay to not be okay — and it’s always okay to ask for help.
