David Reece interviews Harrow Mencap

Radio Harrow’s David Reece met with Emma Cooper, who leads the Carers Project at Harrow Mencap, during Carers Week to discuss support for unpaid local carers.

Harrow Mencap is a local independent charity with a legacy of seventy years. While historically focused on supporting families of individuals with learning disabilities, the organization has expanded its reach significantly. Today, it serves as a vital advocate for all carers across the community, regardless of age, background, or the specific needs of the person they support.

A central focus of their current outreach is the Carers Project, led by Project Manager Emma Cooper. Speaking during National Carers Week, Cooper highlighted the immense, often invisible pressure placed on unpaid carers. These individuals frequently work around the clock without annual leave or financial compensation. Many do not even identify as carers, viewing their efforts simply as a natural extension of family or neighborly duty.

To combat burnout and isolation, Harrow Mencap provides structured support systems:

  • Weekly Carers Groups: These meet every Tuesday between 10:30 and 12:00 at the Business Village or the Mosaic Synagogue to foster community and experience sharing.

  • Fruitful Tuesdays: Held on the third Tuesday of each month, these sessions focus on holistic wellbeing through mindfulness, meditation, and healthy nutrition.

  • Advocacy and Education: The charity helps carers navigate complex legislation like the 2014 Care Act and provides tips for best practices in caregiving.

By encouraging carers to “put fuel in their own tanks,” the charity ensures they remain resilient enough to continue their essential work. Harrow Mencap remains committed to breaking down silos between different community groups and ensuring no carer in the borough has to walk their path alone.
