Harrow Striders Interview

Harrow Striders Interview

We spoke with Dennis, a dedicated community leader who cofounded the organization with his wife, Sue. While often mistaken for a charity, Dennis clarifies that Harrow Striders is a business that partners with local groups to deliver impactful community activities. The initiative began nine years ago following Sue’s retirement from a forty year career in education. To keep her engaged, the couple discovered Nordic walking, a fitness technique inspired by cross country skiers.

What is Nordic Walking?

Dennis describes Nordic walking as “crossfit in the outdoors”. It involves walking with specialized poles that propel the individual forward, engaging the upper body and cardiovascular system while reducing strain on the knees and hips. For beginners, Harrow Striders offers a six week “total body walking” program that transitions participants from standard walking to rhythmic pole techniques.

Community and Mental Health

The organization utilizes Harrow’s thirty one parks, frequently walking through scenic locations like Stanmore Country Park and Wood Farm. Beyond physical fitness, Dennis emphasizes the mental health benefits of these group walks. With a participant base that is 95% female, the group provides a safe, non judgmental environment where people can disconnect from technology and connect with nature.

Movember and Men’s Health

As November approaches, Dennis is spearheading a “Movember” campaign to raise awareness for men’s health. Having survived heart failure fifteen years ago, he is passionate about encouraging men to discuss their struggles. On November 29, Harrow Striders will host a major event at Rickmansworth, partnering with Parkrun to promote awareness for prostate cancer and mental wellbeing. Dennis encourages everyone to join the team and help demystify health conversations for both men and women.
