In this Radio Harrow exclusive, Anneka and Oliver speak to Councillor Ramji Chauhan, the Mayor Of Harrow about raising awareness of dementia. The Mayor was in attendance of a Dementia Hub event at Northwick Park Hospital.
In a heartfelt dialogue with Radio Harrow, the Mayor of Harrow shared his personal motivation for championing dementia awareness. Speaking from the dementia hub at Northwick Park Hospital, the Mayor reflected on his late aunt, a once bright teacher whose life was altered by the disease. This personal loss fuels his commitment to the Northwick Park Hospital dementia program, which aims to provide specialized support for patients, especially those transitioning from care homes.
The Mayor emphasized that dementia is increasingly affecting younger individuals due to high levels of stress. He advocated for holistic wellness practices like yoga and meditation, which are often provided free of charge through local Hindu faith initiatives to foster community and mental health. To support the hospital, he has pledged that any funds he raises will be matched by both the local council and the hospital trust. These funds will provide tablets and screens for wards, ensuring patients have one on one contact and a comforting environment.
Central to his tenure is the theme of unity and diversity. Born in Uganda and having arrived in the UK with very little, the Mayor values hard work and community service. He draws inspiration from the King’s sentiment of being here to serve rather than to be served. With over 700 engagements completed, he prioritizes connecting with residents, including a planned visit for a local woman’s 104th birthday.
He also praised the new Carers Act, which offers unpaid carers five days of leave, noting that while it is a good start, more support is needed as people live longer. Ultimately, the Mayor hopes his legacy will be one of bringing people of all faiths together in peace and harmony.
